Ross and Tucker- Turandot Act 2

In questa reggia as magnificently sung by Elinor Ross for the Philadelphia Grand Opera in 1968. This is surely one of the finest versions of this difficult aria I have ever heard. I was fortunate enough to be at this performance, and it was "white hot."

Her Calaf is a tenor by the name of Richard Tucker, who chimes in near the end with a powerful Bb (alright, A#) and then joins Ross for one of the mightiest high C's I have ever heard. The sound quality is not very good, but the voices come through loud and clear. There is a bit of a goof when almost none of the orchestra comes in near the end at one point, but this matters little. This is thrilling singing.

    All was well until Tucker did the most horrible and unstylish accent after the high C... one of his many mannerisms. Excellent high notes from both, however.

    What mannerism? I guess you liked his high C,at least, hell at 54 or 55 years old not even Corelli could do that at that age and if he did forget it, in fact if you want mannerisms try Franco but having a great voice the scoops and slides and lisp is overlooked and how about Gigli who sobbed even in Che Gelida and how about Lanza who would at times sing hammy ala Hollywood in his recorded arias, Great voice anyhow, how about Jussi who at times was so cold he would dry freeze a steak, the God from the north! and what about Domingo who has a great sense of singing but that tight top often and Bergonzi a bore quite often on stage. I heard them in house yet they are all great and when you love Corelli or Tucker a sob or an accent does not matter and these people who flame singers can't sing shit themselves, any singer can be flamed, Tucker was the best ever anyhow.

    Yes so he accented quickly and heavily after the high C, so what? It's a live show not a studio recording. listen to pav or jussi then, Tucker was secure and even jussi would often sob slightly when he inhaled before the sound came out. Tucker had few habits other then an occasional strong accent and that is minor and in some cases a plus, he had the best voice for Lescaut, Chenier and Forza of anyone on record or tape, accents and all.
