LUCIA DUET- SCOTTO TUCKER 1973

For me, here is the way the role of Edgardo should be sung. Tucker was about 60 here, but his voice knew no years.

Yes, I was spoiled by this, and no tenor since has come close, IMHO. Tucker simply rolls out the gold, as always, singing the most gorgeous of legatos in the Verrano a te section, and handling the high tessiture as if it was easy. He shades beautifully, and give a singing lesson for all those that care to listen.

Scotto is also wonderful, with her incisive voice and handling of the text as few sopranos ever did. They performaned together on Lucia on this occassion in Philadelphia, but also did five or six at the Met the previous season. All were wonderful. Those were the days, my friends!

We hear act one from the entrance of Edgardo until the end of the act.

    This was wonderful. It's in my top 3. DeStefano and Callas in with Von Karajan, Pavarotti and Sutherland, and Tucker with anybody. THanks for the wonderful music.

    Glorious; thank you, Ed. Let's not forget Scotto in this wonderful equation; so Italianate and with Lucia's delicacy, plaintiveness and colors that Netrebko just seemed lacking somehow.

    Tucker was terrific in the role in 1961 when I heard him with Joan S. and in 1970 with Deutekom and he not only blended in 1970 but got great reviews for getting "several winners across the net" like the older tennis star Gonzales who Von Rhein compared him too. He was the talk of the house that night in Chicago. Here he is older in his late 50's but in the house surely the sound was wonderful and in the sextet and after when you need heft he had more and was more convincing as Edagardo then Pav. in the house who I heard also in his prime and after the sextet. Bergonzi who I heard in 61 do it was drowned out at times by Sutherland. I also heard Kraus give a great reading of it live even with his small voice and I preferred it to Pavoratti or Bergonzi. I don't go by recordings, live in house Tucker was terrific in it and was best in the second half of the tomb scene where his emotion was beyond Pavoratti. Besides Kraus as lyrics go Shicoff gave a terrific performance of it in both 1981 and 1986 in Boston and Chicago with lyric and yet ringing tones through out.

    I have to agree with Ed here. In house and in 1947 he sang it in Chicago with Pons and the reviews and even Danny Newman who died last year and was lyric opera's PR man wrote in his recent released book (Tales of a theatrical Guru) that Tucker according to one of the then famous Italian conductors at lyric after hearing that Lucia with Tucker as Edgardo said "Tucker is the greatest Italian tenor I ever heard" He was a very famous conductor Pietro Moranzoni in Italy and Chicago in the 20's and 30's and that show was when Tucker was a lyric spinto of course. that show proves he was a great singer in Lucia and I have some of it.
